Article Icon 1Property Tax Amendment Goes on Ballot

Floridians may see their property taxes go down after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill last week proposing a change in the homestead exemption rules, sending it to the voters for approval on November’s ballot.

The “Homestead Exemption Overhaul” would amend the state’s homestead exemption laws and seeks to address escalating property values and their subsequent impact on property tax obligations. It requires approval from 60% of those voting.

The legislation aims to shield homeowners from surges in living expenses by tying the exemption to the cost of living. As the cost of goods and services escalates, the exemption will also increase, providing some financial respite for homeowners.

Article Icon 1 Report: State Slashed Migrant Medicaid Costs

Florida’s Emergency Medical Assistance program for undocumented immigrants has reduced spending by 54% this year, falling from $148.4 million to $67 million, a new report says.

Gov. Ron DeSantis launched a multi-pronged crackdown on illegal immigration, including a law last year directing hospitals that accept Medicaid to ask patients about their immigration status when they seek treatment.

Hospitals can request emergency Medicaid funding on behalf of a migrant from the Florida Department of Children and Families.
