Article Icon 1Florida Judge Dismisses Trump Case

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon in Miami dismissed Former President Donald Trump’s classified documents trial on Monday on the grounds that the appointment and funding for Special Counsel Jack Smith was illegal.

Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Smith as special counsel in 2022 to oversee federal investigations into Trump’s handling of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach after he left office.

Trump’s lawyers argued that the appointments clause of the Constitution does not permit the Attorney General to appoint a private citizen without Senate confirmation. Judge Cannon ruled that the mere existence of special counsels violates the Constitution.

Prosecutors will be able to appeal the dismissal. In a statement, Trump praised the ruling and said other criminal cases against him should also be tossed out.

Speeding contributes to 10% of all speeding crashes, and there was a 28% increase in the number of people killed in crashes involving speeding from 2019 to 2022.
