Reports that the Florida Department of Education required authors to remove or edit climate change references in science textbooks have led to state representatives demanding answers.

State education officials responded to the controversy, saying, “Florida works with publishers to ensure that their product aligns with our standards and does not include any form of ideology or indoctrination.”

The news comes less than two months after Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a state law removing all references to climate change from state statute.

Abortion procedures in Florida declined in 2024 compared to last year, according to new statistics reported by the Agency for Health Care Administration.

Eighty-four thousand abortions were performed in Florida in 2023, a 15-year high. As of July 1, Florida is on track to see a 14 percent decline in abortions in 2024.

Florida voters will have an opportunity to decide whether to restore full abortion access or keep the state’s current ban when they weigh in on Amendment 4 in the November election.

Florida has been ranked as the third most independent state in the nation based on the self-reliance of its population, according to a new study by financial services company WalletHub.

The study is based on five sources of dependency: consumer finances, the government, the labor market, foreign trade, and personal vices. See the study here.

Only Utah and Colorado ranked higher than the Sunshine State, and Floridians also scored well by having the second lowest incidence of common addictions like gambling, smoking, and drinking.
