Article Icon 1Heat Wave Continues Across State

What weather experts call “dangerous heat” is gripping the state, with the National Weather Service issuing heat advisories for all corners of Florida from the Panhandle to the Keys. Experts say the rest of this week will be more of the same.

With temperatures in the 90s and humidity high in most parts of the state, cities like Orlando have come within one degree of record-setting temperatures.

Central Florida experienced storms and heat indices of 112 degrees on Monday, with similar temperatures, gusty wind, and frequent lightning in the forecast.

Though dryer due to a batch of Saharan dust in the atmosphere, South Florida has had back-to-back heat advisory warnings, with feels-like temps between 105 and 110 degrees.

According to new figures from the CDC, rates of COVID-19 have surged in Florida emergency rooms over recent weeks and are now on par with this past winter’s peak of the virus.

The data shows that on average, 2.64% of patients going to Florida emergency rooms have Covid, which ranks among the highest of any state during this summer’s COVID-19 wave.

Even though Florida is coming off record low levels of the virus, health experts are now urging protective measures.
