Question: Why was Brevard County’s 321 area code chosen?
Answer: A rocket launch countdown.
Say it out loud: three, two, one. By the late 1990s, Brevard County’s growing population had outgrown the 407 area code. Titusville data programmer Robert “Ozzie” Osband noticed 321 was available and pitched it to county commissioners as a tribute to Brevard, which he called the “countdown capital.”
Commissioners and residents loved the idea, and 321 officially took effect on Nov. 1, 1999. So every launch countdown at Kennedy Space Center doubles as a shout-out to a Brevard phone number.
