Question: Which Florida coach nicknamed Ben Hill Griffin Stadium “The Swamp?”
Answer: Steve Spurrier.
Spurrier, the former Gators quarterback who won the 1966 Heisman Trophy, gave Florida Field its nickname in 1992, ahead of his third season as head coach. He pitched the idea to Gainesville Sun columnist Mike Bianchi, whose June 9, 1992, column quoted him: “The ‘Swamp’ is a place where only Gators get out alive.”
The name stuck. In 2016, the university added Spurrier’s name to the stadium, which is now officially Steve Spurrier-Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
