Francine Forms: Florida Braces for Impact

The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season now has its sixth named tropical system. Francine is headed toward Louisiana today or early Thursday, but Florida will also see some impacts. 

Storm activity in Florida currently stems from a stationary front over Central Florida, which will likely shield most of the state from Francine.

Once Francine moves over land by the end of this week, its moisture will spread across northern Florida. If it makes landfall farther east, the western Panhandle could experience more surge and winds by early Thursday morning.

Francine’s rains arrived early this morning in the western Panhandle and will continue through late Thursday. The storm surge will be highest during high tide on Wednesday as Francine nears the Louisiana coast.

The four civilian astronauts, including billionaire Jared Isaacman, two SpaceX engineers, and a former Air Force Thunderbirds pilot, plan to conduct the first-ever commercial spacewalk.

During the spacewalk, scheduled for Thursday, two astronauts will venture farther than anyone since NASA’s Apollo moon missions.

The five-day mission is set to conclude with a splashdown off the Florida coast.

Tyreek Hill Bodycam Video Released

Police in Miami released bodycam footage on Tuesday of a traffic stop involving Miami Dolphins football star Tyreek Hill, who was pulled from his vehicle and handcuffed by officers. See the video here.

Hill was stopped for speeding on his way to Hard Rock Stadium, just hours before the season’s opening game on Sunday.

One of the officers involved in the stop has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation. The local police union said that the officers acted properly during the encounter.

The Dolphins issued a statement supporting their star wide receiver: “We are saddened by the overly aggressive and violent conduct” toward Hill. The team called for the officers involved in the incident to be disciplined.
