Article Icon 1More Than 40 Insurance Companies Lower Rates

More than 40 insurance companies have filed to lower Florida rates on home and auto policies as the market stabilizes after years of steep hikes.

AAA alone is cutting premiums up to 5%, saving Florida policyholders more than $28 million a year across home and auto.

Officials credit 2023 legal reforms that curbed lawsuit abuse and claim costs, drawing new carriers and competition. Auto insurer USAA filed an average 7% cut.

New auto rates took effect June 1, with renewals shifting to August 1. Experts urge drivers to shop around and call their agents.

Article Icon 1Judge Denies Acquittal in Boat-Crash Trial

A Miami-Dade judge denied the defense’s motion to acquit developer George Pino on Tuesday, sending the boat-crash case toward the defense’s turn after prosecutors rested.

Pino, 55, faces manslaughter and vessel homicide charges in the 2022 Biscayne Bay crash that killed 17-year-old Lucy Fernandez and gravely injured classmate Katy Puig.

An expert testified that the boat was going about 47 mph nine seconds before hitting a channel marker. Prosecutors said Pino had a clear view of it; the defense blamed high tide. Pino pleaded not guilty, calling it an accident.

Article Icon 1Wildfires Flare Across Florida

Firefighters are battling brush fires on both ends of Florida as drought and lightning fuel an early fire season.

In Volusia County, the Rookery Fire has burned about 3,700 acres in the Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge west of DeLand, though no structures are threatened.

In west Miami-Dade, a second blaze ignited Tuesday. The Well Fire (450 acres, 10% contained) joined the Quarry Fire (600 acres, 45% contained), which forced a business to evacuate and cut power.

Officials urge residents with respiratory conditions to stay indoors as crews work the lines.

Unknown Number Calling? It’s Not Random

The BBC caught scam call center workers on hidden cameras as they laughed at the people they were tricking. One worker bragged about making $250k from victims. The disturbing truth? Scammers don’t pick phone numbers at random. They buy your data from brokers.

Once your data is out there, it’s not just calls. It’s phishing, impersonation, and identity theft. That’s why we recommend Incogni: They delete your info from the web, monitor and follow up automatically, and continue to erase data as new risks appear.
