Everglades Reservoir Marks World’s Largest Eco-Restoration

Florida is in the early stages of an ambitious ecological restoration project in the Everglades: building a reservoir large enough to secure the state’s water supply.

The Everglades Agricultural Area reservoir, located south of Lake Okeechobee, is slated for completion in 2029 and will store 78 billion gallons of water.

The largest environmental restoration project in the world, the multi-billion-dollar reservoir will provide South Florida residents with a secure, long-term supply of clean drinking water.

The reservoir will also significantly reduce algae-causing discharges that have previously closed beaches and caused mass fish die-offs.

In dozens of Sunshine State suburbs, retirees can manage with less than $3,000 a month, plus an average Social Security payment of $1,870, according to a new list.

GOBankingRates selected 20 Florida locations that offer the best blend of livability and affordability, based on median incomes and the percentage of the population aged 65 and older.

West Palm Beach ranked first on the list, with a livability score of 85 and a monthly cost of living of $2,880 after factoring in the average Social Security benefit.

The remaining top five suburbs are all near Tampa: Brandon (No. 2), Seminole (No. 3), Largo (No. 4), and Sun City Center (No. 5).
