Florida is World’s 15th Largest Economy
Florida’s economy is now the 15th largest in the world, according to the Florida Chamber Foundation’s latest update. Florida’s GDP now exceeds $1.7 trillion annually, surpassing Spain and ranking $25.5 billion behind Australia.
The Foundation’s long-term goal is to see the Sunshine State become one of the top 10 global economies by 2030. Its plan is outlined in the Florida 2030 Blueprint Halftime Report, presented at the Future of Florida Forum in Orlando last week.
The report was compiled after a two-year research program that engaged business and community leaders in each of Florida’s 67 counties, identifying key trends and the factors that drive their regional economies. Here’s an overview sheet.
The blueprint identifies six pillars for the state’s future economic success, including enhancing Florida’s talent pipeline to foster a better workforce, promoting job diversity, and preparing Florida’s infrastructure for growth and development.
Miami’s Complicated Mayoral Race
Thirteen candidates are vying today for the part-time job of serving as Miami’s city mayor. The role lacks the power of the county mayor and is considered symbolic. The city mayor has no commission vote but can veto legislation and hire and fire the city manager.
If no candidate wins the nonpartisan election with more than 50% support, the two candidates with the most votes will face a Dec. 9 runoff.
The election features candidates from political dynasties. Joe Carollo is on the ballot along with his brother, Frank Carollo, who is running for the city commission. Xavier Suarez is the father of the current mayor, Francis X. Suarez, and is running to succeed him.
Joe Carollo and Xavier Suarez are both former mayors. They ran against each other in 1997, in an infamous election that resulted in a judge invalidating Suarez’s victory and making Carollo mayor after finding widespread voter fraud.
In addition to deciding races for mayor and commission seats representing Districts 3 and 5, Miami residents will vote on four ballot questions, mainly aimed at shifting power from the city government to citizens.
Crowded Field in Orlando’s District 3
In today’s nonpartisan election in Orlando, five candidates are vying to replace Commissioner Robert Stuart, who is not seeking a sixth term on the Orlando City Council. The candidates include Samuel Chambers, Roger Chapin, Chris Durant, Kimberly Kiss, and Mira Tanna.
The District 3 city commission seat oversees Baldwin Park, Audubon Park, College Park, Rosemont, and other surrounding neighborhoods.
Chapin and Tanna emerged as the top two candidates, with Chapin winning the endorsement of Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. Chapin, the son of former Orange County Mayor Linda Chapin, raised the most money, with over $214,000, compared to Tanna’s $57,000.
In Orlando’s District 5 city council election, Regina Hill is fighting to get her old seat back after Gov. Ron DeSantis suspended her from office last year following her indictment on felony charges.
