Article Icon 1St. Pete Commits $6M to Save Tropicana Field

Last week, St. Petersburg’s city council reluctantly approved $6 million to waterproof Tropicana Field Stadium and prevent further damage while evaluating whether repairs are feasible following the destruction caused by Hurricane Milton.

If the Tampa Bay Rays’ stadium is deemed unsalvageable in the coming days, the city plans to halt the waterproofing work, preserving a portion of the $6 million.

While council members expressed concern about approving funds without knowing the stadium’s viability or repair costs, city staff said it was the least risky option to secure insurance coverage and prevent further deterioration.

With three years remaining on the Trop’s use agreement, St. Pete is responsible for providing the Rays with a major league-quality facility. If the stadium is rendered unusable, the city risks breaching the agreement, potentially allowing the team to seek damages and consider leaving Pinellas County.
