Childcare Costs Impact Economy
A Florida TaxWatch report shows that finding childcare is increasingly challenging for working parents. The report encourages employers to provide better childcare for workers and says the childcare industry should consider paying employees more.
According to the Tallahassee-based research institute, economic losses due to employee absenteeism increased by $1.8 billion from July 2022 to today, with a $4.2 billion increase in income loss. The institute attributes this to a lack of available and affordable childcare.
Sixty-four percent of working parents missed an average of 19 workdays per year due to childcare-related issues, with 14% leaving early at least once. The institute also flagged a pay gap that makes the childcare industry hard to sustain.
According to the organization’s executive vice president, the average Florida childcare worker makes $16.64 per hour, or just over $34,000 annually.
Robinhood Crypto Under Investigation
Attorney General James Uthmeier launched an investigation into Robinhood Crypto, a cryptocurrency and stock trading platform, on allegations of deceptive marketing practices.
Robinhood is allegedly breaking Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Practices Act by promoting its crypto platform as the least expensive way to purchase crypto, when, according to Uthmeier, “there is evidence to suggest that is not true.”
Using a practice known as payment for order flow, Robinhood routes customer orders to third-party firms for a fee. The AG’s office suspects that this practice might lead to less favorable prices for Robinhood customers compared to other platforms.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection and Florida State Parks launched the 2025 Capture the Real Florida photo contest, encouraging photographers of all levels to submit their best shots by Sept. 1.
This year features a special fifth category—historic encounters—in addition to the annual categories of landscapes, waterscapes, park adventures, and wildlife. The contest is open to all visitors of Florida State Parks. You can submit photos here.
To celebrate the country’s upcoming 250th birthday, the new category recognizes the “contributions of all who helped shape Florida’s communities and preserve the stories that define our shared heritage.”
Category winners will receive a B&H Photo gift card, a Florida State Parks family annual entrance pass, branded swag, and a stand-up paddleboard. The public can vote in each category for a People’s Choice Award.
