Duke Energy joined nine other energy companies asking the Trump administration to roll back Biden-era pollution regulations on greenhouse gases and coal ash.

The utilities sent a letter to new EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin saying the new rules “have resulted in significant burdens on the nation’s power sector without tangible benefits.”

The request drew backlash from environmental groups, who said the rules protect the public and that the U.S. should continue to focus on renewable energy.

Duke serves more than 2 million Floridians.

Article Icon 1Sheriff: Juvenile Holding Center Unsafe

Blaming staff shortages and an unsafe building, the Broward Sheriff’s Office will no longer send deputies to work at the state’s holding center for juvenile offenders as of May.

Informally known as “juvie,” the state Juvenile Assessment Center in Fort Lauderdale accepts children age 17 and younger arrested for misdemeanors and felonies, including murder.

Currently, the sheriff’s department staffs the facility 24 hours a day and, after intake, turns the children over to the state Department of Juvenile Justice.

Disney will convert the building that formerly housed the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser hotel and experience into offices for its Imagineering department.

The 100-room hotel near Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios, which opened in March 2022 at a cost of $1 billion, closed in September 2023.

Guests were immersed in a story that played out during their stay, with rooms costing $4,800 for a two-day, two-person “cabin.”

A Disney theme park superfan posted a four-hour critique of the experience, titled “The Spectacular Failure of the Star Wars Hotel,” which has 11 million views on YouTube.
