Article Icon 1Florida Stores Included in 12-Million-Pound Meat Recall

A recall of almost 12 million pounds of meat is affecting hundreds of products sold at stores throughout Florida. See the recall list here.

Routine testing found evidence of Listeria monocytogenes on BrucePac ready-to-eat poultry, which can cause a listeriosis infection if consumed. The meat has been included in hundreds of products sold throughout the U.S.

BrucePac supplies ready-to-eat meat to other companies, which then use it in various products. As of Thursday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) had a 343-page list of retailers, brands, and food items containing the meat.

The meat also was distributed to schools, according to the USDA.

Article Icon 1Election Spending Limits on the November Ballot

Amendment 6 on the November election ballot asks whether to repeal Article VI, Section 7 of the Florida Constitution, which establishes a spending limit for candidates using public funds for their campaigns.

Adopted in 1998, the current law states that the state Legislature is responsible for providing funding for statewide elections.

The eligible offices include governor, attorney general, chief financial officer, and commissioner of agriculture—as long as the candidate is not running unopposed and agrees to spending limits.

An initial attempt to repeal the policy failed in 2010. Now, Florida voters will decide whether this policy should stand. A super-majority vote of 60% is required to pass the amendment.

Article Icon 1Miracle’ Birth During Milton

A baby born during Hurricane Milton is being called a ‘miracle’ after what his parents endured to safely reach the hospital and then undergo an unplanned C-section.

First-time mom Kenzie Lewellen went into labor at her home in Port Charlotte as the storm was approaching. After almost five hours in labor, she and her boyfriend, Dewey Bennett, decided it was time to head to Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Venice.

The baby’s grandfather passed away during Hurricane Irma in 2017, and Bennett was concerned something terrible could happen again as they drove through hurricane-force winds and rain.

Along with Dewey Lester Bennett IV, six other babies were born during Milton at the two Sarasota Memorial hospitals.
