AG Investigating Tate Brothers
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has opened a criminal investigation into brothers Andrew and Tristan Tate following their arrival in Fort Lauderdale. The pair were released after being held on human trafficking charges in Romania.
In the U.S., the brothers face a civil suit from a woman alleging they coerced her into sex work and then defamed her after she gave evidence to Romanian authorities. They deny all allegations against them.
Andrew Tate responded to the announcement by asserting that investigators would not be able to convict him because he regularly deletes all the data from his electronics.
Upon the Tates’ arrival in Florida last week, Gov. Ron DeSantis said, “Florida is not a place where you are welcome with that type of conduct.”
Statewide Animal Abuser Database in the Works
A Volusia County woman who created a local database listing people charged with animal abuse is helping create legislation for a statewide database.
The proposed database—intended to be consulted during the animal adoption processes—would work in tandem with Ponce’s Law, Florida’s felony aggravated animal cruelty statute.
Debbie Darino, president and founder of The Ponce Animal Foundation and the driving force behind Ponce’s Law, established the nonprofit in 2017 after a 9-month-old black Labrador Retriever puppy named Ponce was killed in Ponce Inlet.
If enacted, the statewide system would be integrated into the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s website and automatically include anyone who was convicted of—or who has pleaded guilty or no contest to—animal abuse charges.
Stuart’s Frazier Creek Named Top New Brewery
A Treasure Coast brewery has landed the top spot on USA Today’s list of the 10 best new breweries in the country. You can see the full list here.
“It’s only every couple of years that a Florida brewery is nominated,” co-founder Etienne Bourgeois said. “We do have a lot of breweries in Florida, so for the focus to be on us, it’s absolutely breathtaking.”
RAK Brewing Co. in Frederick, Maryland, and Hot Plate Brewing Co. in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, rounded out the top three.
