Article Icon 1State Calls for a Census Recount

Florida is calling for a recount of the most recent U.S. Census, claiming there was an undercount in 2020. Gov. Ron DeSantis and Attorney General James Uthmeier made the announcement Wednesday at Palm Beach State College in Lake Worth.

The governor believes the state deserves at least one more representative in the U.S. House, bringing the number to 29, saying this is “something that’s kind of stuck in my craw.”

DeSantis said if Florida receives another representative, it will necessitate redrawing the congressional maps.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but every state that got shortchanged was a Republican state and every state that got more was a Democrat state,” DeSantis said. “That’s just the truth about how that Census was applied.”

Article Icon 1Moody Tours State to Promote Bill’s Benefits

During a speech in Tampa, U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody promoted the benefits of the One Big Beautiful Bill passed by Congress in July, highlighting its advantages to businesses.

Moody spoke before Florida Small Business Development Center members during their Small Business Success Summit. Moody said she was thrilled to help back the bill in Congress after Trump proposed it.

Moody has spoken at several events since the legislation was approved. Last week, she was in Melbourne, where she held a town hall with space industry workers and residents to address future planning for the space program.

Earlier this month, Moody appeared with U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon in Tampa. She noted that the bill helps to expand school choice options for parents and students.

Gov. Ron DeSantis presented five iconic Floridians with a posthumous award of the Governor’s Medal of Freedom, one of the highest honors in the state of Florida: Daniel Robert “Bob” Graham, Kenneth Hood “Buddy” MacKay Jr., James “Jimmy” Buffett, Lincoln Diaz-Balart, and John Thrasher.

I’m proud to recognize the legacies of these great Floridians,” DeSantis said in a written statement. “Our state is better for their contributions, and we’re proud they called Florida home.

The Governor’s Medal of Freedom, established in 2020, is awarded to individuals who have made exceptionally meritorious contributions to Florida and its citizens.

The legendary Florida State University football coach Bobby Bowden was the inaugural recipient of the recognition on April 7, 2021.
