Alligator Alcatraz Revelations

A DHS inspector general report found that some detainees at Florida’s “Alligator Alcatraz” were held in outdoor metal cages roughly 18 square feet for up to two hours.

Inspectors who showed up unannounced in January counted 79 detainees placed in the 4-foot-3-inch enclosures since the site opened in July 2025. Staff called them “calming areas” to “reflect on their behavior choices.”

ICE guidelines set 37 square feet as the minimum for a one-person room. The report called such spaces “highly unconventional” and not in line with “standards for humane treatment.”

DHS said that ICE had no contract to run the site and that Florida’s 287(g) agreement gives federal officials no authority over facility operations. Inspectors noted over $608 million in FEMA grants and ICE staff on site. The Everglades facility closed in June.

Amazon Pauses Carrier after Miami Crash

Amazon suspended its partnership with cargo carrier 21 Air on Sunday, a week after one of the carrier’s Boeing 767s loaded with Amazon packages overran a Miami International Airport runway and killed five people.

The jet came in fast on Sept. 6 and barreled 1,300 feet past the runway’s end before smashing into a van carrying workers for a plane cleaning company. All five who died were in the van. Five others were hurt.

Cockpit audio captured one pilot repeatedly warning that the plane was going too fast. About 15 seconds after touchdown, a pilot called for a go-around, and the speed brakes and thrust reversers were never deployed, NTSB investigators said.

“We’ve decided to pause our operations with 21 Air,” Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said, adding that other carriers will pick up the shipments. 21 Air said it remains confident in its safety policies, procedures, and training.

Trail Cameras Catch Panther Mom, Kittens

Trail cameras at Babcock Ranch Preserve caught a Florida panther and her three spotted kittens padding through the brush in March, north of the Caloosahatchee River, where biologists have monitored the cats for more than a decade.

The female and one kitten turned up again in July at the preserve northeast of Fort Myers, with its baby spots gone. FWC biologists say that females raising young this far north indicate the breeding range can extend past the river.

Adult males have wandered central Florida for years, but a mother with kittens is the marker biologists watch for. Natural expansion into the former range is an important step toward the panther’s recovery, wildlife officials said.

The wild population sits near 200, most of it along the Gulf Coast, up from roughly 20 in the 1970s. Vehicle strikes and development have kept the cat on the brink of extinction for decades.
