 DeSantis Calls GOP-Backed Amendment ‘Foolish’
Gov. Ron DeSantis called a Republican-backed constitutional amendment “foolish” on Monday and recommended a no vote, hours after the Republican Party of Florida endorsed the measure to let the state keep far more money in its rainy day fund.
Amendment 1, on the Nov. 3 ballot, would raise the reserve’s cap from 10% of general revenue to 25% and direct up to $750 million into it each year until it fills. Florida last tapped the fund in 2008, during the Great Recession.
Florida already has a “maxed out rainy day fund” and has run the largest surpluses in state history, DeSantis wrote on X. Any extra revenue should go to lower taxes, grants to exempt homesteads from local property taxes, and eventually removing tolls.
Party chairman Evan Power made the opposite case, saying, “Amendment 1 keeps Florida prepared for storms, emergencies, and downturns without raising taxes.” Lawmakers sent it to voters 100-1 in the House and 29-4 in the Senate, and it needs 60% support to pass.

Brennan Subpoenaed in Fort Pierce Probe
Former CIA Director John Brennan was subpoenaed to testify Oct. 15 before a federal grand jury in Fort Pierce as part of the Justice Department’s “grand conspiracy” investigation, one of his attorneys said Monday.
The investigation examines whether officials who investigated President Trump over the past decade, from the 2016 Russia inquiry to the classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, conspired to deprive him of his civil rights. Prosecutors call Brennan a subject of that case, not a target.
Joe diGenova, the prosecutor who had been leading the probe, signed the subpoena on Wednesday and resigned the next day amid friction over the case’s management. “Everybody was in their lane, and then some lanes got crossed,” he said.
Brennan’s lawyers asked a Washington judge Monday to order the department to preserve records they say would support a claim that any prosecution is vindictive. A department lawyer countered that Brennan hasn’t been charged and lacks standing to sue.

FSU Fires AD, Norvell Speculation Swirls
Florida State fired athletic director Michael Alford on Monday, launching speculation about whether football coach Mike Norvell would also be dismissed. Firing him, however, and hiring a replacement would cost the school roughly $130 million.
President Richard McCullough said the goal is to modernize the athletics department and bring in revenue faster. Senior associate athletics director Bruce Warwick will run the department on an interim basis while Florida State searches nationally for a replacement.
Norvell is 8-18 since the start of 2024, and fans chanted “Fire Norvell” as they left Doak Campbell Stadium after the 27-24 loss to SMU on Labor Day night, a game briefly played in the dark following a stadium power outage. Alabama is up Saturday.
McCullough isn’t ready to make a change, saying, “Nobody wants to win more than Mike Norvell—except maybe me.” The coach’s eight-year, $84 million extension runs through 2031, and firing him during the season would trigger a $51 million buyout.
