Amazon Plane Overruns Runway, Kills 5

A Boeing 767 cargo jet flying for Amazon overran the runway while landing at Miami International Airport around 2 p.m. on Sunday, striking multiple vehicles beyond the airfield and bursting into flames. 

At least five people were killed and five others injured, three of them critically, Miami-Dade officials said. More than 60 fire rescue units responded, and a hotline was set up for relatives of anyone possibly involved.

All runways were closed and a ground stop issued before two of four runways reopened on Sunday evening. The victims’ identities have not been released.

Senate Rivals Work Labor Day Crowds

Florida’s two U.S. Senate nominees spent Labor Day weekend courting voters across North Central Florida, two months ahead of the Nov. 3 election.

Democrat nominee Angie Nixon worked the Swamp and fraternity row at the University of Florida on game day on Saturday, while Republican Sen. Ashley Moody visited the Ocala Shrine Rodeo alongside Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods.

Moody, appointed in 2025 after Marco Rubio became secretary of state, won her primary on Aug. 18 while casting the race as a choice between her record and a self-described socialist.

Nixon, a Jacksonville state representative and Democratic Socialists of America member, upset Alexander Vindman in her primary and has centered her campaign on affordability and health care.

School E-Bike Rules Start Tuesday

Starting Tuesday, only Orange County students holding a driver’s license or learner’s permit may bring an e-bike or e-scooter onto school property, ending a grace period in place since classes began.

The school board approved the rule in July after hours of public comment, and the district logged 41 e-bike incidents from December through May. An estimated 11,800 students ride e-bikes to Orange County schools.

Qualifying riders must register their devices for a district decal and walk them once on campus. Some families told the board e-bikes are their children’s main way to school; others pushed for tighter rules, including the mother of a 13-year-old killed riding his e-bike in May.
