Article Icon 1Gulf Depression Poised to Become Bertha

Tropical Depression Two formed on Sunday morning in the northern Gulf, prompting a tropical storm watch for a stretch of the Florida Panhandle coast.

The system was churning about 155 miles south of Panama City with 30 mph sustained winds, crawling north-northwest at 2 mph. The National Hurricane Center expects it to become Tropical Storm Bertha.

Heavy rain is the bigger threat, with up to 5 inches possible from west-central Florida into the Big Bend and localized flash flooding through early this week before the system turns west.

Influencer brothers Andrew and Tristan Tate were arrested Saturday in Miami by U.S. Marshals on a sealed warrant as Britain seeks their extradition.

The Crown Prosecution Service announced 38 additional charges involving four more alleged victims, bringing the case to 59 total counts against the pair, including rape and sex trafficking.

An attorney for the brothers called the arrests a “political hit” and said both men are innocent. A separate Romanian trafficking case against the dual U.S.-British citizens remains pending.

The Navy confirmed the magnitude 3.9 blast recorded on Thursday about 91 miles off Ponce Inlet was a scheduled shock trial for its newest destroyer, the future USS Ted Stevens.

A spokesperson said the ship “successfully completed the first of two scheduled test events” in its Full Ship Shock Trials, which detonate live ordnance nearby to prove combat readiness. Another test is planned in about two weeks.

The blasts have shaken Florida seismographs before: a 2021 trial for the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford registered an identical 3.9, and a 2016 test of a combat ship measured 3.7.
