Article Icon 1Florida Tourism Dips in First Quarter

Florida drew slightly fewer tourists in the first quarter, with an estimated 39.89 million visitors from Jan. 1 to March 31, down 1% and its weakest first quarter since 2022.

Out-of-state travelers were nearly 92% of the total, down 1.2%. Overseas arrivals rose 8.5% to 2.29 million, while Canadian visits fell 12.1% to 1.05 million.

Visit Florida CEO Bryan Griffin said more visitors are driving in, some flying to out-of-state airports first. “We need to let those numbers settle before we know for sure,” he said.

The agency also revised its 2025 Canadian count up to 3.17 million after fixing an Ontario ports undercount, which softened the full-year decline but raised the baseline this quarter is measured against.

A good samaritan was among three people killed Sunday when a box truck drifted off the road and overturned on southbound Interstate 75 near Naples, triggering a deadly chain reaction.

Florida Highway Patrol said a 25-year-old Naples man stopped his BMW around 3:54 a.m. to help the truck’s driver, who had minor injuries. A Tesla then hit the overturned truck and the man, who died at a hospital.

Two Tesla passengers, ages 18 and 19, were pronounced dead at the scene, while the 20-year-old driver and another passenger were seriously hurt. The crash closed southbound lanes for hours.

Ultra-wealthy tech founders flocking to South Florida are building their own private schools, frustrated with what they see as a lack of options for their kids.

Entrepreneur John Marshall, part of the wave of founders drawn to Miami, launched BaseCamp305 in 2019 in Miami Beach—a roughly $30,000-a-year school of about 50 students built around a project-based entrepreneurship curriculum.

He blames schools he calls Ivy-obsessed and disconnected from practical skills. “Wisdom is brought about by need. I think there’s a need,” Marshall said, as South Florida districts face falling enrollment and competition from private options.
