DeSantis May Delay Session on Redistricting
Gov. Ron DeSantis suggested Tuesday that he may delay a special legislative session to draw new congressional maps, which is scheduled to begin April 20. At a Tallahassee news conference, the governor said “it will happen within the next couple of weeks,” but that no decision had been made.
Some say the governor may delay the session to wait for a redistricting vote scheduled in Virginia on April 21 on a referendum about a new map. DeSantis said he had “no idea what the relevance of Virginia” has to Florida’s redistricting decisions.
DeSantis has not produced any preliminary maps, and Senate President Ben Albritton’s office made clear his chamber has taken no steps toward redistricting. DeSantis said the Legislature should lead the process of drafting new cartography.
The idea that lawmakers might delay or even opt out of congressional redistricting has picked up steam. DeSantis has urged lawmakers to anticipate a U.S. Supreme Court ruling, potentially on Friday, that could upend decades of precedent on the interpretation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Cherfilus-McCormick Criminal Trial Delayed to 2027
A Miami federal judge in the case against Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick and three co-defendants granted a delay in her trial until February 2027, after defense attorneys and prosecutors jointly filed a motion to delay the fraud trial, citing voluminous discovery that has yet to be reviewed.
The congresswoman, a Democrat who represents large portions of Broward and Palm Beach counties, had been scheduled to stand trial during the two weeks starting on Monday. Attorneys said they had received over 1.2 million records with more expected.
Last November, a federal grand jury in Miami delivered an indictment including 15 charges that accuse her and three others of stealing $5 million in federal disaster funds, laundering the money, and using it to support her 2021 congressional campaign.
Cherfilus-McCormick has denied the charges and vowed to remain in Congress while she defends herself.
