2,535 Condo Buildings Flagged
Milestone inspections turned up substantial structural deterioration in 2,535 Florida condominium and cooperative buildings in 2024 and 2025, according to a new state report.
Officials tagged 54 of those buildings as “unsafe or uninhabitable” across eight counties. Five were evacuated, including three beachfront buildings at Villa Del Sol in St. Lucie County.
The inspections stem from the 2021 Champlain Towers South collapse in Surfside, which killed 98 people. Condos three stories or taller and at least 30 years old must now be checked.
The picture is partial: only 71% of local jurisdictions reported 2024 data, and 64% reported 2025. State Rep. Juan Carlos Porras, R-Miami, said the numbers understate the problem: “I think there were a lot of buildings that could have been probably deemed unsafe that weren’t.“
Donalds Pitches NASA Move to Brevard
Rep. Byron Donalds unveiled a plan Friday to move NASA’s headquarters from Washington, D.C., to Brevard County.
The Republican frontrunner for governor calls it “Florida’s Space Race,” built around H.R. 2422, the Consolidating Aerospace Programs Efficiently at Canaveral Act. NASA’s Washington lease expires in August 2028.
At a UCF lab in Oviedo that makes simulated moon and Mars soil, Donalds pledged faster permitting at 10 strategic development sites and zero-tuition training for welders and machinists.
“If all the action is here, then why is NASA sitting in Washington to do what exactly?” Donalds said, noting 165 rockets launched from Florida in 2025. The bill’s co-leads include Democrats Jared Moskowitz and Debbie Wasserman Schultz.
Lake Mary Softball Rolls in Opener
Lake Mary Little League’s softball team opened the Little League Softball World Series with a four-inning, 14-0 shutout of Washington’s Snohomish Little League on Sunday.
Lake Mary claimed the Southeast Region spot by going 4-0 at regionals, beating Pitt County of Winterville, North Carolina, 3-1 in the final. The state championship came on June 28 in Port St. Lucie.
This is the second straight trip to the Series. Last summer, the team went 3-2, with both losses to Tulsa National Little League of Oklahoma.
