Armed Man Killed at Mar-a-Lago
U.S. Secret Service agents and Palm Beach County law enforcement shot and killed an armed man early Sunday after he unlawfully entered the secure perimeter at Mar-a-Lago. The president and first lady were at the White House in Washington at the time of the incident.
The suspect, in his twenties and identified by police as Austin Tucker Martin from North Carolina, was armed with a shotgun and carrying a gas can.
Martin entered the secure perimeter at Mar-a-Lago through the north gate as an employee was exiting at around 1:30 a.m. He made it about 20 or 30 yards inside the gate before he was confronted by law enforcement and shot when he failed to put down his weapon.
Martin had been reported missing by his family. Investigators believe he headed south from North Carolina and picked up the shotgun on the way to Florida.
Penguins Help Make Their Case to Lawmakers
Florida Aquarium’s African penguins Archi, Enzi, Nuru, and Pebbles waddled their way through the Capitol last week, as the Aquarium renewed its push for state dollars to harden its Tampa campus against storms and floods. You can see a video here.
Aquarium officials said the tuxedoed visitors were sent to Tallahassee as living reminders of what’s at stake—animal habitats, life-support systems, and science-based conservation programs that are threatened by hurricanes and coastal flooding.
The Florida Aquarium is hoping to fund these projects through a Local Funding Initiative Request. After passing during the 2025 legislative session, the aquarium’s request for storm protection funding was vetoed by the governor.
Team USA Takes Gold in Men’s Hockey
Orlando-born Jack Hughes scored the game-winning goal for Team USA on Sunday in the men’s hockey gold medal game at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, beating Canada 2-1 in overtime.
The victory came 46 years to the day from what is known as the “Miracle on Ice,” when a team of U.S. amateur hockey players stunned the heavily favored Soviet Union en route to winning Olympic gold in Lake Placid, New York.
Hughes, a center and alternate captain for the New Jersey Devils, won the day to give the U.S. its third-ever gold medal in men’s hockey. Hughes’ shot ripped past Canadian goalie Jordan Binnington, less than two minutes into the 3-on-3 overtime.
Quinn Hughes, Jack’s teammate and brother, scored the game-winning shot last week against Sweden in overtime to secure Team USA’s place in the semifinals.
Two NHL stars who play for Florida teams competed for Team USA. Winger Matthew Tkachuk plays for the Florida Panthers, and winger Jake Guentzel plays for the Tampa Bay Lightning.
