Article Icon 1Bill Proposes Mask Ban for ICE

Two Florida lawmakers on Thursday introduced a bill called the VISIBLE Act. It would require law enforcement and immigration officers to display visible identification and ban face coverings during public enforcement operations, with exceptions for undercover work and hazardous conditions.

State Sen. Carlos Guillermo Smith (D-Orlando) and Rep. Angie Nixon (D-Jacksonville) filed matching House and Senate bills.

Officers should not be able to grab people off the street while hiding behind a mask. The use of this draconian tactic has led to several incidents of criminals posing as ICE officers committing robberies, kidnapping, and sexual assault,” Smith said.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem disagreed, saying in August,With a rise in violence that we continue to see against these officers, with that 1,000% increase, it’s making sure that they are safe while they do this job, and that they get home to their families.

Article Icon 1Judge Denies Reinstatement after Kirk Post

A federal judge has denied a request to force the state to reinstate a biologist who was fired over a social media post made after the killing of conservative Christian activist Charlie Kirk.

The crux of this case comes down to whether plaintiff has met her burden … to show that her free speech interest outweighs FWC’s (the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s) interest in the effective and efficient fulfillment of its responsibilities,” said U.S. District Judge Mark Walker, who noted that free speech is not absolute.

The case began when Brittney Brown, a biologist assigned to the Tyndall Air Force Base Critical Wildlife Area, was fired after sharing a post from a parody account that said whales weren’t saddened by Kirk’s death.

Article Icon 1Broward County Name Change Stalled

A proposal to rename Broward County as Lauderdale County was withdrawn at Thursday’s commission meeting after facing pushback over the time and cost the change would require.

Broward Commissioner Michael Udine had championed the change as a boost to tourism, saying, “I think people outside of the area have no clue where (Broward County) is.”

Supporters of the change say they plan to regroup and spend more time educating the community about the potential benefits.

Broward County’s name has been around for over 100 years and is named after former Florida Gov. Napoleon Bonaparte Broward.
