Article Icon 1Florida Airports Reduce Air Traffic

Beginning this morning, the FAA is reducing air traffic by 10% across 40 high-volume markets, including at four Florida airports, to maintain safety during the ongoing government shutdown. See the full list here.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced Wednesday that traffic in the affected areas will be reduced to cope with shortages of air traffic controllers, who are working without pay.

Orlando International Airport (MCO), Miami International Airport (MIA), Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport (FLL), and Tampa International Airport (TPA) are among the airports affected.

The cutback stands to impact thousands of flights nationwide, as the FAA directs over 44,000 flights daily, including commercial passenger flights, cargo planes, and private aircraft.

Article Icon 1House Bill Requires E-Verify for all Employees

A state House committee advanced a bill that would require all private employers to use E-Verify, a federal database that checks whether job applicants are authorized to work in the U.S., closing what some lawmakers have called a loophole.

The measure, House Bill 197, put forward by Seminole Republican Rep. Berny Jacques, cleared its first committee this week and must clear another before it can be voted on by the House floor.

The current law, enacted in 2023, requires E-Verify only for public employers and private employers with 25 or more workers. HB 197 would remove the 25-employee threshold.

Supporters argue that expanding the requirement would strengthen the integrity of Florida’s workforce, while critics contend that it would impose new burdens on small businesses already struggling to hire.

Article Icon 1President Trump Speaks at Miami Business Event

President Donald Trump spoke on Wednesday at the 2025 America Business Forum at Miami’s Kaseya Center, marking the first time the event has been held in the U.S. since its launch in Uruguay in 2016.

The two-day conference brought together leaders from business, politics, and culture to discuss innovation and leadership. See Trump’s speech here.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, a Miami Palmetto Senior High alumnus, closed the forum on Thursday. Speakers included Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Corina Machado, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, tennis legend Serena Williams, and soccer star Lionel Messi.
