Demings Joins Gubernatorial Race
Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings has joined the growing list of Democratic candidates seeking to become Florida’s next governor. Considered a trailblazer in Central Florida, he is one of the most prominent Democrats in the state.
Demings, 66, repeatedly broke the color barrier in Florida law enforcement and politics, serving as Orlando’s first black police chief in 1998, before becoming the first black Orange County Sheriff from 2008 to 2018. He was also elected as the first black mayor of Orange County in 2018, winning a second term in 2022. He would be Florida’s first black governor if he wins.
The current Democratic frontrunner, former Republican Congressman David Jolly, joined the Democratic Party in April and announced his candidacy soon after.
On the GOP side, Trump-endorsed U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds is among the front-runners, along with former House Speaker Paul Renner and First Lady Casey DeSantis, who has been rumored as a potential candidate.
$30 Million in Funding for Childhood Cancer
On Monday, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced $30 million in grant funding to four specialty children’s hospitals to develop and improve access to clinical trials, to advance treatment protocols, and to research cures for childhood cancer.
DeSantis was joined in Jacksonville by First Lady Casey DeSantis to share how the newly created Cancer Connect Collaborative Research Incubator will further the state’s role as a leader in cancer research and treatment.
The five-year initiative will distribute $7.5 million to Wolfson Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami, and Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg.
Gov. DeSantis stated that since taking office in 2019, “we’ve invested more than $1 billion in cancer research and treatment.” Casey DeSantis, a cancer survivor, stressed that the funding will be available for the next five years.
NASA’s Next Mars Mission
NASA and Blue Origin are preparing to launch two satellites this month to study Mars’ magnetosphere and the impact of solar winds on the planet.
Humans traveling to Mars on future missions will need to rely on accurate Mars weather data to stay safe from solar radiation storms. Understanding the magnetosphere and upper atmosphere will aid in those missions.
Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket will launch the Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers (ESCAPADE) mission from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
The two satellites, called Blue and Gold in honor of the University of California, Berkeley’s colors, will spend 12 months in an Earth-proximity orbit before firing engines in a slingshot maneuver, using Earth’s gravity to propel Blue and Gold toward Mars in November 2026.
