Lawmakers Push Property Tax Relief
State House leaders have submitted eight bills on property tax relief, hoping the proposals gain enough legislative support to go to voters in November 2026.
House Bill 71 by state Rep. Jeff Holcomb would offer a $1,000 rebate to homeowners who receive a homestead exemption on properties valued between $100,000 and $450,000.
Another bill would limit hikes to 3% every three years, while House Joint Resolution 205 would exempt homeowners aged 65 and older from paying non-school homestead property taxes.
The state’s 2026 legislative session starts Jan. 12.
Teachers’ Kirk Posts Released
Lee County School District released the social media posts that led to the recommended firing of three teachers.
An example of one of the posts: “What’s that about the cost of the second amendment being ‘some gun deaths every year?’ Bye Charlie.”
A district spokesperson said one of the teachers has resigned, another has relocated to a different state, and the third has until Nov. 4 to request a hearing.
The social media posts violated the district’s ban on posting offensive content and disrupted school operations, school officials said.
