Article Icon 1Florida Leaders to Join Trump’s Administration

President-elect Donald Trump plans to tap U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio as his secretary of state, which would make him the first Latino to helm the State Department. Rubio, the son of Cuban exiles, has represented Florida in the U.S. Senate since 2011.

Gov. Ron DeSantis will be tasked with appointing a replacement for Rubio in the Senate, who will serve until a special election is held in 2026.

On Tuesday, Trump named Rep. Michael Waltz, a Florida Republican, as his national security advisor.

Susie Wiles, a Florida-based political strategist known for her significant role in Trump’s 2024 campaign, was appointed White House chief of staff last week and will be the first woman to serve in the position.

PortMiami reported a record fiscal year with over 8.2 million passengers cruising, a 12.8% increase, taking back the title of busiest cruise port from Port Canaveral.

In the coming year, at least six new ships are scheduled to depart from PortMiami, which is set to open the world’s largest cruise terminal. In May, PortMiami reported an economic impact of $61.4 billion, accounting for 3.9% of Florida’s GDP.

Port Everglades also reported a record-breaking cruise passenger number for fiscal year 2024, highlighting the region’s dominant role in the global cruise industry.

Article Icon 1Hurricane Center Monitoring Potential Storm

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is monitoring an area of interest in the western Caribbean Sea, where a broad area of low pressure could form and potentially impact Florida.

Current storm models indicate a possible path toward the state, though it is too early to predict the exact track of this disturbance.

The NHC reports that environmental conditions appear conducive to the system’s gradual development after the low forms in the coming days. As it moves westward, a tropical depression could take shape late this week or this weekend.

The seven-day formation chance was at 80% on Tuesday. The upcoming storm will be named Sara.
