Article Icon 110 New Bills Signed into Law

As the holiday weekend began, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed 10 more bills into law, establishing new annual observances, ethics rules, and healthcare procedure changes. Many of the laws will take effect on July 1.

Florida will now join the national observance of Aug. 21 as Fentanyl Awareness and Education Day to put a spotlight on the dangers of fentanyl and potential overdoses. The state will also officially observe Holocaust Remembrance Day on Jan. 27 each year.

A new “stolen valor” law prohibits candidates, public officers, and public employees from making fraudulent representations related to military service.

Effective immediately, healthcare practitioners may allow a certified paramedic to administer a controlled substance with supervision during an emergency.

Explosions on land and sea rocked South Florida over the holiday weekend, with 11 injured in a boat explosion in Fort Lauderdale and 10 injured in a propane gas explosion in Florida City.

Fire Rescue responded to the Lauderdale Yacht Club Monday afternoon after a boat carrying 13 people and a dog was engulfed in flames on the sandbar east of the yacht club in the Intracoastal Waterway.

Ten of the 11 people injured, including two children, were transferred to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s burn unit. The cause of the explosion is under investigation.

On Saturday, a gas explosion rocked a Florida City strip mall, prompting a large-scale emergency response by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

A suspected propane leak led to the blast that caused a partial roof collapse at the commercial complex. Eight of the victims were transported by paramedics to local hospitals.
