DeSantis Nixes Budget Summit
Gov. Ron DeSantis rejected a proposal on Monday from the Republican Party of Florida to host a summit to resolve a state budget impasse between the GOP-led House and Senate.
Negotiations broke down Friday, with the two chambers reportedly billions of dollars apart, primarily due to conflicting tax cut proposals.
“We’re not going to do a dog-and-pony show,” DeSantis said. “People should do their jobs.“
While no date is set for full legislative budget talks, the House met on Tuesday to extend the negotiation deadline through June. The new fiscal year begins on July 1.
Beshear and Booker Headline Gala
The Florida Democratic Party announced that Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker will be the featured speakers at its annual Leadership Blue Gala.
The marquee event will be held June 21 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood as part of a three-day Leadership Blue weekend.
Beshear is the popular two-term governor who has won as a Democrat in a red state. He is believed to be considering a run for president in 2028.
Booker made history last month when he stood on the Senate floor and gave a 25-hour speech protesting the actions of the Trump administration.
Floridians Support Property Tax Cut
In an April survey of 1,200 Floridians by the James Madison Institute, 46% said they support eliminating property taxes, 32% supported reducing sales taxes, and 12% said they preferred the status quo.
When asked whether they support eliminating property taxes by expanding the homestead exemption for primary residents, 65% said yes, 24% opposed the proposal, and 11% were unsure.
However, 60% indicated they were concerned about how eliminating property taxes would affect potential cuts to local services, such as law enforcement and public schools. Only 33% of voters said that they were not concerned.
According to a report by the Florida Policy Institute, if lawmakers want to eliminate property taxes, they would need to raise $43 billion, or $2,015 per Floridian, to maintain the public services currently funded by property tax revenue.
