Article Icon 1Florida’s Role in Operation Epic Fury

When President Trump launched strikes on Iran, the commanders at U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa took control of coordinating the attacks for Operation Epic Fury.

CENTCOM, led by Adm. Brad Cooper since August, directs military operations across 21 countries in the Middle East, Northeast Africa, and Central and South Asia. The command shared updates of the operation on social media, including strike summaries and casualty reports.

Trump oversaw the launch from a situation room at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, while a black-tie charity gala was taking place at the same venue. He remained throughout the weekend.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was among the leaders at Mar-a-Lago, has suggested that a planned Israeli attack on Iran determined the timing of the operation.

Article Icon 1Senators Scale Back Labor Law Bill

State senators amended a bill (SB 1296) that critics warned could create the nation’s strictest organized labor law. The measure is fiercely opposed by labor leaders, who say it could dramatically weaken unions throughout the state.

The bill would have required certain public sector unions to secure the majority of all registered employees to certify, or recertify, rather than just the majority of those voting.

An adopted amendment instead requires that the union must get at least 25% voter turnout from the full bargaining unit, and 60% of those voters must approve certification or recertification.

Supporters call the bill pro-worker and say it strengthens accountability. Opponents argue it is anti-union, excludes police and fire unions, and risks constitutional challenges. The bill now heads to the full Senate for consideration.

Article Icon 1Miami Awaits the Freedom Plane

Some of the founding-era documents of our nation started a journey on Monday that will take them across the country, including to Miami, on a specially outfitted Boeing 737 dubbed the “Freedom Plane.”

For the first time, nine U.S. documents were removed from their vaults at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., as part of America’s 250th anniversary celebration. They will travel to eight American cities from now through August, allowing them to be viewed by thousands of people.

From June 20 to July 5, the documents will be on display at HistoryMiami Museum. The museum will present a digital mural inviting visitors to share their wishes for America’s future, along with a July 4 Independence Day celebration.

The museum will launch America 250: Voices of the Future, a countywide high school oratorical contest encouraging students to reflect on the ideals expressed in the nation’s founding documents. See all tour stops.
