State Petitions Supreme Court Over Immigration Law

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier asked the U.S. Supreme Court to allow the state to enforce a new immigration law that makes it a misdemeanor for people living in the U.S. illegally to enter the state.

The petition is the latest in an ongoing battle between Uthmeier and U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams. In an emergency appeal, Florida asked the justices to put on hold Williams’ decision preventing police from enforcing the new law.

Last week, Williams held Uthmeier in contempt for instructing officers to continue enforcement, despite the judge’s orders, until the courts decide whether the law is constitutional.

A federal appeals court in Atlanta declined to halt Williams’ order. The appeal to the Supreme Court argues that the state has a right to protect itself from the harm of illegal immigration.

FBI Urges Local Cooperation

On Monday, FBI Director Kash Patel was in Fort Lauderdale to speak to members of law enforcement from across the country about rising national security threats from cartels, illegal immigration, and potential Iranian retaliation.

Patel spoke at the National Sheriff’s Association annual conference at the Broward County Conference Center, urging tighter coordination between federal and local agencies, describing the nation’s sheriffs as the eyes and ears of terror intelligence.

He stressed that the FBI’s data is only as good as what comes in from precincts nationwide and that Iran-backed sleeper cells are already in the country awaiting activation.

Patel reinforced recent Department of Homeland Security warnings about a heightened threat environment inside the United States.

60 Missing Children Recovered in Tampa Bay

Eight suspects were arrested, and 60 critically missing Florida children were recovered during Operation Dragon Eye, which U.S. Marshals are calling the most successful missing child recovery operation in American history.

Twenty federal, state, and local agencies partnered to safely recover missing children ages 9-17 throughout the Tampa Bay area, including kids from Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco counties.

“The number is not just a statistic,” said Rita Peters, special counsel to Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier. “It actually represents a life and a future that was given one more chance.“

Florida leaders have stepped up both funding and legislative efforts to fight human trafficking. Gov. Ron DeSantis allocated $4.9 million to expand emergency shelter beds and staff support, while an additional $900,000 in grant funding was provided.
