$87M Approved for Local Immigration Enforcement
Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet approved more than $87 million in immigration enforcement grants for 56 local law enforcement agencies on Tuesday, acting as the state’s newly created Board of Immigration Enforcement.
The grants—which include $30.3 million in new awards and $57 million in additional funding for agencies already in the program—cover a wide range of equipment: radios, AI-powered surveillance cameras, body cameras, and bulletproof vests.
Among the approved purchases: biometric eyeball scanners and mobile surveillance towers for agencies that hold immigration detainees, costs previously flagged in an earlier round of grant awards.
One Osceola County sheriff’s official said the grants will offset local budget pressure.
Pino Boat Crash Trial Begins
Testimony began Tuesday in the trial of George Pino, the Miami real estate developer charged with manslaughter and vessel homicide in a 2022 Biscayne Bay boat crash that killed 17-year-old Lucy Fernandez and left another teen passenger permanently injured.
Authorities say Pino, now 55, was at the helm of a 29-foot boat carrying 14 people on Sept. 4, 2022, when it struck a channel marker near Boca Chita Key, throwing everyone aboard into the water. Investigators were told Pino had consumed two beers; he was not given a sobriety test, though 61 empty alcohol containers were reportedly found on the recovered vessel.
Opening statements stretched into Tuesday after Pino repeatedly broke down in court Monday, prompting an early recess. Jurors then heard from the state’s first witnesses, including Lucy’s father, Andy Fernandez, who recalled his final hug with his daughter. Pino faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted. Testimony resumes on Wednesday.
NASA Names Artemis III Moon Crew
NASA on Tuesday revealed the four astronauts set to fly the Artemis III mission in 2027, taking the next step toward humanity’s return to the moon. The mission will launch from Kennedy Space Center on Florida’s Space Coast.
Commander Randy Bresnik leads the crew alongside veteran Frank Rubio, first-time spaceflight astronaut Andre Douglas, and European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano. Bob Hines will train as the mission’s backup crew member.
The Artemis III crew won’t land on the moon. The mission will test docking procedures with SpaceX and Blue Origin commercial lunar landers in Earth orbit.
The tests are critical preparation for Artemis IV, NASA’s first planned crewed landing at the lunar South Pole, currently targeting 2028.

This Metal’s Up 170% in the Last 12 Months
No, not gold. Lithium. Prices have more than doubled in the last year alone, spurring a modern-day “white gold” gold rush driven by AI, energy, and more.
With demand growing 5X by 2040, a major opportunity is emerging. No wonder 40,000+ people have already invested in EnergyX.
Their patented tech can recover up to 3X more lithium than traditional methods, in days instead of months. That combination of technological prowess and market demand earned an investment from General Motors.
In the past 24 months, EnergyX has raised nearly $100M from retail investors, holds rights up to 13M tons of lithium across North and South America, and announced plans for their second lithium project in the U.S.
