Article Icon 1Florida Officially Adopts Gulf of America

Gov. Ron DeSantis signed two bills yesterday mandating that the Gulf of Mexico be renamed the Gulf of America across state agencies and schools.

The move follows a federal executive order from President Donald Trump and makes Florida the first state to adopt the ‘Gulf of America’ designation.

The legislation applies to district and charter schools and requires them to use Gulf of America in instructional content and library materials.

Under the law, all state maps, documents, signs, and school materials created or updated after July 1 must reflect the change.

Article Icon 1Attorney General Targets Orlando’s Immigration Policy

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier is threatening to remove Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer from office over the city’s immigration enforcement policies.

Uthmeier cited Dyer’s support for Orlando’s 2018 Trust Act, which limits local involvement in immigration enforcement, calling the act void under a 2019 state law banning sanctuary city policies.

Dyer responded yesterday, defending the city’s practices and noting that Orlando partners with ICE in accordance with a document called the Task Force Model as city officers undergo training.

Article Icon 1Body Cam Footage Shows Miami Airport Birth

Newly released body camera footage shows the moment law enforcement and emergency crews helped deliver a baby boy at Miami International Airport in November.

The mother was in between connecting flights when she went into labor, prompting swift action from Miami-Dade Police Department officers, agents with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and Miami-Dade Airport Division staff.

One officer exclaimed, “We got a boy!” as the baby was delivered in Terminal D, where responders dried and swaddled him before transporting both mother and child to a nearby hospital.
