Attorney General James Uthmeier sent out a memo on Monday instructing law enforcement to no longer enforce a ban on openly carrying firearms, after a court ruling declared the prohibition unconstitutional.

It’s gonna be a big change for us,” St. Lucie County Sheriff Richard Del Toro said. “As a law enforcement officer for 27 years, I’ve always been trained that if you see a gun, it’s a threat. So I have to retrain myself now.”

The 1st District Court of Appeal issued its ruling in a case stemming from the July 4, 2022, arrest of a man who stood at a major intersection in downtown Pensacola carrying a visible, holstered pistol and a copy of the U.S. Constitution.

A fight broke out at Pensacola’s vigil for conservative activist Charlie Kirk Sunday evening after a mural featuring him was defaced. At least one person was sprayed with pepper spray.

The mural had been commissioned at Graffiti Bridge, with artist Rodman Laser saying, “I’ve done several other American icons. This was especially brutal; I think it was a bit of a surprise and heartfelt across America.”

The vigil continued with hundreds of Charlie Kirk supporters lighting candles by the bridge. As of Monday morning, however, the mural had been completely painted over.

The Pensacola Police Department is asking anyone who may have witnessed the altercation at the vigil to contact them.

Former Miami-Dade Commissioner Joe Martinez was sentenced to three years in prison on Monday after a jury found him guilty of using his political power for financial benefit back in November 2024.

I’m sorry it’s come to this. I think you know what I think about your history… but I feel like my hands are tied,” Judge Miguel de la O said.

Martinez was accused of accepting $15,000 in payments from a supermarket owner facing fines for code violations in exchange for bringing favorable legislation before the Miami-Dade County Commission.

Martinez’s defense attorney Ben Kuehne said they are appealing the decision.
