Article Icon 1“Patty” Could Enter Caribbean as a Hurricane

The National Hurricane Center reports that a new storm system named Patty is expected to develop into a tropical storm in the Caribbean this weekend.

Starting east of Central America and south of Jamaica, the storm is projected to drift north and northwest. At this point, there is no clear indication that the storm will reach Florida or other parts of the United States.

But the odds that the system would escalate from low pressure to a tropical storm or worse increased in recent days from low to medium range, last measured at 40%. Follow Patty’s progress on the live tracker.

The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season ends on Nov. 30.

Florida’s post-pandemic growth has increased demand for public services and strained insurance availability. Homeowners are struggling to find coverage as Citizens, the state’s insurer of last resort, has had to drop some policyholders.

It’s too soon to know if the additional costs from back-to-back hurricanes will be offset by people leaving because they fear the next big storm.

If you’re wondering which Florida markets are most volatile, here’s a ranking, using data from Zillow.
