Florida Seeks Raúl Castro’s Arrest
Florida announced Monday it had obtained a state arrest warrant for former Cuban President Raúl Castro, 95, charging him with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in the 1996 shootdown of two Miami exile planes.
The no-bond warrant names Castro and brother Fidel as final decision-makers in the Feb. 24, 1996, attack, which killed four men aboard unarmed Brothers to the Rescue planes. Castro later recalled telling generals to “shoot them down at sea when they show up.”
“It was not an accident. What happened was murder,” Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said in an FIU law school courtroom named for the four victims. A May federal indictment already charges Castro with murder.
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel called May’s indictment a political stunt. Uthmeier acknowledged that Castro is “probably not looking to march himself into Miami,” but said the warrant prevents him from traveling to any country with a U.S. extradition treaty.

Florida Driver Records Hit by Hackers
Florida’s highway safety department is mailing letters to drivers whose license and vehicle records may have been exposed when a hacker logged into a state system on Sept. 4 with stolen credentials.
The intruder gained access using a Plant City Police login that an employee had improperly stored on a personal device, the state said. Officials blamed an unnamed “international cybercriminal organization” and said there’s no sign the data has been misused.
A hacking group called ShinyHunters, which said it hacked the FBI, posted a dark web claim in September and gave officials a Sept. 11 deadline to pay to stop a leak. The state hasn’t named the group or disclosed how many records were taken.
Affected drivers will receive free identity and credit monitoring for a year, plus $1 million in identity theft insurance.

Gators Open Season Ranked No. 1
Florida will open the men’s college basketball season at No. 1 after claiming 47 of 59 first-place votes in Monday’s preseason AP Top 25, with Duke and Illinois taking the rest.
It’s the Gators’ first preseason No. 1 since 2006, when Florida opened on top and repeated as national champion. Todd Golden’s team returns four starters, including Thomas Haugh and Alex Condon, from a 27-win squad that earned a No. 1 seed.
The Gators started last season ranked No. 3 and lost to Iowa as a No. 1 seed in the tournament’s second round.
