Grand Jury to Examine Hope Florida
A grand jury convened on Monday in Leon County to investigate Hope Florida, a state program led by First Lady Casey DeSantis, which aims to help people transition off government assistance. Accusations against the organization include fraud, money laundering, and misuse of taxpayer funds.
Hope Florida is classified as a direct service organization under Florida law, meaning it is a nonprofit formed to directly support the mission of a specific state entity. In this case, that entity is the Department of Children and Families.
At issue is $10 million that the nonprofit arm of the organization received, which was diverted from a $67 million Medicaid settlement in 2024. A state House subcommittee investigated and has since turned its information over to prosecutors in Tallahassee.
The $10 million allegedly went to a political action committee led by Attorney General James Uthmeier, who was Gov. DeSantis’s chief of staff at the time. Both DeSantis and Uthmeier have repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
The Flagler County Fire Department confirmed the object was a live, unspent flare and called the U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team from the Mayport Naval Station to assist. The flare was safely removed without incident. You can see photos here.
Two days earlier, more than 20 pounds of cocaine were found washed ashore on Hammock Beach in Flagler County. Deputies said a dog walker spotted a suspicious bag Thursday night.
