Article Icon 1Lawmakers Resume Budget Conference

The Florida Legislature will resume budget negotiations today to iron out detailed spending plans for specific areas, including education, criminal justice, and infrastructure. The goal is to reach an agreement by mid-June.

Unresolved issues after Thursday will be bumped to the House and Senate budget chiefs, as lawmakers must produce a budget before July 1. Gov. Ron DeSantis maintains line-item veto authority over the finalized budget.

According to sources familiar with negotiations, the state budget for fiscal year 2025-26 will now include an across-the-board 2% pay raise for state employees, which was not previously included.

The Legislature is scheduled to meet on June 16. The exact date and time will be determined by a required 72-hour cooling-off period between when lawmakers finish work on the budget and when they officially pass it.

Attorney General James Uthmeier issued subpoenas to multiple Florida hospitals over price transparency compliance to “ensure they comply with Florida law and provide patients with open, transparent pricing for medical services.”

In a video posted on X last week, Uthmeier mentioned President Donald Trump’s agenda and an executive order, Make America Healthy Again, aimed to “empower patients with clear, accurate, and actionable health care pricing information.”

Uthmeier said he issued subpoenas to multiple Florida hospitals as part of an investigation into patient charges, disclosures, billing practices, price transparency, and surprise billing protections.
