Miami to Vote on Moving Election
The Miami City Commission has planned a preliminary vote at tonight’s meeting on a controversial proposal to push the November municipal election to 2026 and give the city’s current elected officials an extra year in office.
The day after Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said such a change must be approved through a ballot referendum, Miami City Attorney George Wysong authored an opinion stating that the city commission has the authority to move the election.
The city could be in for a battle with the state, as the governor said in a social media post that he agrees with Uthmeier and that “city of Miami politicians do not have the authority to cancel this year’s elections.”
City Commissioner Damian Pardo, who sponsors the legislation, is seeking to move the city to even-year elections with higher voter turnout.
Florida Man Takes Aim at Spam and Vienna Sausages
Patrick Francis Mitchell, 70, was arrested for allegedly urinating on over $10,000 worth of canned goods at a Sam’s Club in Lady Lake. He has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to appear in court again on June 30.
A customer witnessed the event, took pictures with her phone, and shared them with the store staff. Security footage caught Mitchell in the act at two pallets of canned goods, containing 345 cans of Spam and 188 cans of Vienna sausages.
Mitchell, who remained in the store for ten minutes after the alleged act before completing his purchase and leaving, was identified through information linked to his Sam’s Club membership.
Report: Moving Around Florida
According to a new study, Florida residents are moving to Orlando more than to any other location within the state, with the most frequent relocation being from Miami to Orlando. Jacksonville ranked as the No. 2 destination.
“Orlando boasts a lower cost of living (home costs are a whopping 42% less than in Miami) and a new high-speed rail connection between the two cities,” the study reads.
The study also found that Kissimmee, Ocala, and The Villages attracted the most new moves compared to those leaving, and that Hialeah is the least likely destination for inter-Florida moves.
With more than 1 million people moving to Florida last year, the study says New Hampshire is sending more of its population per capita to Florida than any other state. Floridians leaving the state are considering North Carolina.
