Volusia Takes the Lead in School Safety
Volusia County schools are implementing some of the most advanced school security measures in the state. School leaders said the district has invested in new advanced security technologies across all educational levels.
Every school in the district has a safe school officer. Safety upgrades include ZeroEyes, an AI gun detection platform that uses existing campus security cameras to detect possible weapons and alert staff and law enforcement in real time.
The sheriff’s office launched its Behavioral Threat Unit, which includes three school resource deputies and a lieutenant. The unit works with new metal detectors that use AI technology to detect weapons without slowing down the entrance process.
The district also has a firearm detection K9, Maverick, who will continue rotating through middle and high schools throughout the year. Last October, the Volusia County school board approved amending its safety policy to align with the state’s model.
Crane Creek Project Completed
At a press conference on Monday, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the completion of the Crane Creek M1 Canal Flow Restoration project, preventing stormwater from nearby communities from carrying harmful nutrients into the Indian River Lagoon.
The canal was built over 100 years ago to control flooding in the area. It changed how water naturally flowed between the St. Johns River and the Indian River Lagoon, causing runoff-fueled algae blooms and damaging water quality.
DeSantis said that, since 2019, the state has awarded more than $3.3 billion to more than 1,000 projects to protect Florida’s resources.
For the fiscal year budget, the state invested $460 million for water quality improvements and $50 million for the alternative water supply grant program.
New School Law for Allergic Responses
A new law requires K-8 public schools to have effective allergic reaction and anaphylaxis responses on hand. School personnel are mandated to be able to identify when a student is experiencing an allergic reaction and administer emergency epinephrine.
A report by the Florida Department of Health said about 76,000 students in the state have life-threatening allergies. Additionally, 112,680 students diagnosed with asthma may also experience severe allergic reactions if exposed to allergens.
