 Florida AG Threatens WNBA with Charges
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier threatened assault charges against WNBA players after a flagrant foul that leveled Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham on Saturday.
Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington was ejected for the foul, which struck Cunningham across the face and neck, then posted “white privilege” on Threads. The league fined her $1,000.
“The WNBA knows better than to play games down here in Florida, because I’ll be charging people with assault,” Uthmeier posted, later clarifying he meant assault and battery. The league has no Florida team, and Cunningham has recently drawn attention for opposing transgender athletes in women’s sports.

Hurricane Center Tracking Three Systems
Florida is in the clear for now, even as the National Hurricane Center monitors three Atlantic disturbances at once after a quiet start to the season.
One system sits west-northwest of Bermuda, drifting east over open water. Two tropical waves are crossing the central and eastern Atlantic, and the wave nearest Africa has the best chance of organizing; it would take the name Cristobal.
Wind shear and a marginal environment stand in its way, and even if a storm forms, steering currents should turn it north over the open Atlantic. The season’s climatological peak arrives Sept. 10.

Boy’s Memorial Statue Stolen from Park
A bronze statue honoring Jakey Duque, a Miami Lakes boy who died of a rare brain cancer at 5, was stolen over the weekend from the park that bears his name.
Jakey died in June 2020, a month after his fifth birthday. His parents documented his fight online, drawing supporters who called themselves “Jakey’s Army.” The life-size replica was unveiled in 2021 at the park near Northwest 154th Street and 89th Avenue.
Social media account OnlyinDade is offering $10,000 for information leading to its recovery, and Jakey’s parents say they won’t press charges; they just want the statue back.
