Florida’s first governor under statehood was born in Lenoir County, North Carolina, on February 1, 1795. Moseley began his political career as a member of the North Carolina State Senate, serving from 1829 to 1836. He moved his family to a plantation on Miccosoukie Lake, Florida, in 1836 and resumed his public service. Moseley served in Florida’s Territorial House of Representatives in 1840 and in the Territorial Senate in 1844. He was elected governor on May 26, 1845, and sworn into office on June 25, 1845.
