Question: What was the name of Florida State University from 1909 to 1947?

Answer: Florida State College for Women

In 1905, Florida lawmakers reorganized the educational system, with six state institutions of higher learning consolidated into two. The University of Florida in Gainesville was established and designated to be a men’s school, and the Florida State College became a women’s school called the Florida Female College.

In 1909, the college’s name was changed to Florida State College for Women, an institution that grew to become the third-largest women’s college in the nation during the 1930s. In 1947, demand from returning World War II veterans brought men back to the campus, and on May 15, 1947, the governor signed a bill that returned Florida State College for Women to coeducational status and named it Florida State University.
