It started with a phone call from New York. In September 2009, a physician there reported a patient sick with dengue whose only recent travel had been to Key West. Two more cases turned up in Key West residents who hadn’t traveled at all.
When the CDC and Florida health officials surveyed Old Town, about 5% of residents showed signs of recent infection. Cases kept appearing into 2010. It was the first locally acquired dengue outbreak in the continental U.S. outside the Texas-Mexico border since 1945.
