Good Morning! On this day in 1848, the Great Gale pummeled Tampa Bay. The powerful hurricane made landfall near Clearwater and decimated the area. The storm rewrote the map of Florida’s west coast, creating John’s Pass between Treasure Island and Madeira Beach, and New Pass near Sarasota.
The National Hurricane Center continues to monitor the development of two disturbances in the Atlantic, which could become hurricanes Humberto and Imelda. If the second one develops, it could impact the Caribbean and approach the U.S. East Coast.

Local Officials Challenge Property Tax Accusations
As cities around the state finalize millage rates and budgets for the coming year, local government officials resisted state efforts to challenge their spending and cut property taxes.
With a Florida House panel finishing a two-day review of property-tax issues on Tuesday, city and county officials defended their financial management amid the governor’s push to ask voters next year to slash taxes on homesteaded properties.
Casey Cook, chief of legislative affairs for the Florida League of Cities, called local governments “the most transparent forms of government in the state” and said “waste is in the eye of the beholder.“
Meanwhile, in Jacksonville, the city council finalized the budget in a 13-hour meeting. A reduction in property taxes was approved as part of a $2 billion general fund budget after the state CFO said the city overspent nearly $200 million in the last five years.
Streets Renamed to Honor Charlie Kirk
In the first bill of its kind, a Miami Republican lawmaker proposed renaming a portion of a state road to Charlie Kirk Memorial Avenue to honor the late conservative Christian activist Charlie Kirk.
State Rep. Juan Carlos Porras filed his measure (HB 33) on Tuesday. A “portion of S.R. 985/S.W. 107th Avenue between S.W. 24th Street and S.R. 90/S.W. 8th Street in Miami-Dade County” would be renamed if approved.
The same day, the Lake County Board of County Commissioners unanimously voted to designate a portion of Schofield Road as the Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway.
The decision followed a tense public meeting where dozens of residents debated Kirk’s legacy. Supporters praised him for his dialogue with young people, while opponents argued he was a divisive figure.
Three Spacecraft to Map Sun’s Influence
With SpaceX’s help, NASA and NOAA launched three spacecraft from Kennedy Space Center early Wednesday. The spacecraft will travel a million miles from Earth on a mission to protect the planet from devastating solar storms.
The first craft is NASA’s Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe (IMAP), which will study the heliosphere, the space “bubble” that surrounds our solar system and protects Earth from cosmic rays and particles from deep space.
The second craft is NOAA’s Space Weather Follow-On Lagrange 1 (SWFO-L1). This satellite will observe solar wind and solar storm activity, acting as an early warning signal to protect the power grid, planes in the air, and astronauts.
The third craft, Carruthers Geocorona Observatory, is being sent to study Earth’s outermost layer of the atmosphere, called the exosphere, and determine its size, shape, and density.
