Cruise and Other Operations Unaffected by Port Strike

Seven of Florida’s 15 seaports are cruise ports, with PortMiami and Port Canaveral being the busiest in the world. Despite the union’s strike against cargo operations, cruise lines and military operations remain unaffected.

PortMiami has designated areas for picketing while maintaining operations. The strike will stall imports and exports of fresh produce from South America, rum from the Caribbean, and the $17 billion of fresh seafood that is moved through the port.

Jacksonville Port Authority officials have cautioned that the strike could affect up to one-third of its business. Puerto Rico cargo and other operations comprise two-thirds of its activity and are expected to remain unaffected.

At Port Everglades, minimal impact is foreseen. Port Canaveral is not directly affected by the strike as cargo operators use nonunion labor.

Convicted Jaguars Ex-Employee Sues Sportsbook

A former Jacksonville Jaguars employee, convicted of stealing $22 million from the team, is suing FanDuel for $250 million in damages—claiming the sportsbook “exploited” his gambling addiction.

In a civil suit filed in the Southern District of New York, an attorney for Amit Patel alleges that FanDuel incentivized Patel to keep playing daily fantasy sports despite signs of a gambling problem.

The sportsbook allegedly gave Patel $1.1 million in credits and trips to championship games and tournaments. The suit claims that Patel’s VIP host at FanDuel communicated with him as many as 100 times a day.

In March, Patel pleaded guilty to wire fraud and illegal monetary transactions, admitting to stealing $22,221,454.40 from the Jaguars over three years while managing the team’s virtual credit card program.

Florida Groups Honor ‘Socktober’

West Pensacola Elementary School children aim to collect 2,000 pairs of new socks this month for their annual Socktober drive to help the homeless. Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Tampa has a similar goal.

Socktober drives take place around the state and country each October. They were started in 2011 in Arkansas by Brad Montague, who wanted to help his hometown’s large homeless population.

The Knights of Columbus in Tampa are helping Scared Heart with the drive and reminding people that socks are often the most requested, yet least donated, item at shelters. 

The Socktober website directs individuals and organizations to find shelters in their communities and offers ideas for helping. You can find a local Florida shelter here.
