Rubio Takes White House Press Briefing
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the former U.S. senator from Florida who fills multiple roles in the Trump administration, added substitute White House press secretary to his resume on Tuesday.
Already the subject of online memes for wearing many hats, Rubio said he was filling in for Karoline Leavitt while she’s on maternity leave. The highly visible appearance added to recent speculation about a potential 2028 presidential run.
One reporter accidentally said, “Thank you, Mr. President,” when called on before correcting himself to say Secretary of State. Rubio, a Miami native, has said he would not challenge Vice President JD Vance for the GOP nomination.
Most of the questions during the 50-minute press briefing centered on the conflict in Iran and high gas prices. One reporter also asked Rubio what his DJ name is, referring to a video on X that showed him behind a DJ booth at a wedding last weekend. Rubio answered, “You’re not ready for my DJ name.”
USF St. Petersburg Campus to be Restored
Pinellas County lawmakers will seek funding for the University of South Florida (USF) at next week’s special session of the state Legislature to finalize the state budget. The need follows a devastating fire at the Marine Science Laboratory (MSL) building on the school’s St. Petersburg campus.
Rep. Lindsay Cross, whose district includes St. Petersburg, confirmed that she is talking to budget leaders about supporting the restoration, though the exact level of need and damage is not yet clear.
USF officials say a lightning strike likely caused the fire. Damage was significant, as salt water was used to quell the flames. The building may be a total loss, adding to concerns about the decades of research and rare marine samples stored inside.
Over the course of its 85-year history, the MSL served as the headquarters of a maritime training facility during World War II and as a potential fallout shelter during the Cold War. It was the first home for both Eckerd College and USF St. Petersburg before becoming a center for USF’s marine research.
Ted Turner Dies at 87
Billionaire media mogul Ted Turner, who founded the cable TV networks CNN, TNT, TCM, and TBS, has died at 87. The Ohio-born Atlanta businessman, nicknamed The Mouth of the South, built a media empire and owned professional sports teams, including the Atlanta Braves.
Turner maintained a 32,000-acre estate known as Avalon Plantation in Jefferson County, near Tallahassee. He married actress and activist Jane Fonda on the estate in 1991. They divorced in 2001.
Turner utilized the large property for conservation efforts, including protecting threatened gopher tortoises and restoring native habitats. He previously listed Avalon as his primary residence.
