Good Morning! On this day in 1967, a Miami woman was sentenced to 30 days in jail after she was pulled over in a station wagon filled with 25 nursery-age kids. She couldn’t explain where she was or where she had come from.
Saharan dust is headed to Florida. It travels to the Sunshine State each summer, causing hazy skies, colorful sunsets, and lower air quality.

Gold and Silver Made ‘Legal Tender’
Gov. Ron DeSantis held a press conference on financial sovereignty Tuesday in Apopka to sign a bill allowing people to use gold or silver coins to pay for bills.
The bill is based on a clause in Article I of the U.S. Constitution that allows states to “make gold and silver coin a tender in payment of debts,” including taxes, within the state’s borders.
The bill exempts qualifying gold and silver coins classified as “legal tender” from Florida sales tax. It also allows government agencies to accept gold and silver coins to pay bills through electronic transfer or with a debit card.
The state legislature must ratify the rules governing gold and silver. Florida’s Chief Financial Officer must submit those to the governor and lawmakers by Nov. 1. If lawmakers agree to everything, the law would take effect July 1, 2026.
Governor DeSantis also signed five other bills into law on Tuesday.
Former ‘Hero’ Sentenced for Felonies
A man once hailed as a hero in Volusia County for fixing senior citizens’ and veterans’ homes damaged in the 2022 hurricanes was sentenced to eight years in prison on Tuesday for defrauding people out of tens of thousands of dollars.
Steve Parker pleaded guilty to 12 felony counts after Port Orange police arrested him for impersonating a contractor and stealing money from hurricane victims in seven cases.
Parker was first arrested in October 2023 after he was hired by a local family, who gave him nearly $74,000 in FEMA funds to fix their house. Little of the work was completed.
Investigators found Parker was never a contractor and used the license and identification of another man—also named Steve Parker—who is a legitimate contractor in South Florida.
Florida Cities are ‘Talent Dense’
Cities in Florida claimed five of the top 20 spots for top-tier innovation hubs across the South in a new ranking that determines which cities in the region are the most “talent dense.”
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings coined the phrase talent dense to describe localized clusters of skilled professionals, particularly in fields like technology, science, and engineering. The study weighed 15 metrics across employment, business environment, and education.
Orlando (No. 5) was the highest-ranking Florida city and had the third-highest increase in STEM employment, at 55%. The city came in second for the density of its vocational STEM institutions and for the 4,332 vocational STEM awards it gave out.
The study revealed that 44% of college-educated residents in Miami (No. 7) moved in last year, and Miami is No. 1 for STEM vocational institutions. Gainesville (No. 10) tied with Charleston, South Carolina, for vocational STEM program density.

Spencer Rascoff co-founded Zillow, scaling it into a $16B real estate giant. But everyday investors couldn’t invest until after the IPO, missing early gains.

Now he’s doing just that. Spencer teamed up with fellow Zillow exec Austin Allison to launch Pacaso. Pacaso’s co-ownership marketplace is disrupting the $1.3T vacation home market. They’ve already surpassed $110M in gross profit and $1B in transactions.
